Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego Deluxe is also known as Carmen Sandiego 2.0—with a vastly improved graphical interface, sixteen maps, twenty villains, digitized photos from National Geographic, more than thirty-two hundred clues, music from the Smithsonian/Folkways Recordings, and sixty countries.
There is a lot to unpack in this game. The original’s simple printouts have been exchanged for a videophone, and a cast of characters—from Warren the Warrant Robot to the bowtie-wearing Chief—enliven gameplay. Each country has its own music soundtrack, and as you go through each case you have the opportunity, in between questioning witnesses and dialling Crimenet, to listen to snippets of languages and read paper clues.
The game is not very different from the original. The VILE gang still steal priceless cultural treasures, and you still have a week to catch them. As you solve cases you earn promotions until finally you take on Carmen herself and get a shot at the Hall of Fame. The game was a critical and commercial success and was released at about the same time as Where in the USA and Where in Space. In general it’s a much more enjoyable experience than the original for aesthetic reasons alone.
- The deluxe version is a direct remake of the 1985 version
- This version was also re-released for Windows in 1995 with even more improved visuals & sound but the “deluxe” tag was dropped.
Steam release (2020)
In 2020 a game of the same name was released on Steam by the studio
The Learning Company but this did not garner much attention. Reviews seem lukewarm and those who believe this was a straight up remake of the old DOS games (1985 or 1992 release) were disappointed.
